When coal was discovered on Hashima at the beginning in the 19 th century, traffic to the island began to increase. From 1887 to 1974, the island served as a seabed coal mining facility; during this time Hashima was constantly inhabited, with the population continuously increasing as more and more undersea coal mines and mine shafts were established. Hashima, also known as Gunkanjima (‘battleship island’ – so named because of its ship-like silhouette), is an island off the coast of Nagasaki in southwest Japan. If you've seen the James Bond movie Skyfall (2012) you may already know this place: that desolate island that was the villain's lair – Hashima provided the inspiration and the aerial shots.
